General Motors (GM) said on Tuesday it sold more than 21,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States in August, marking a new monthly record and surpassing July’s previous high of 19,000 units. The company’s EV sales for the first eight months of 2025 have already exceeded 118,000, surpassing the total of roughly 114,000 sold in 2024.

The automaker’s electric lineup, which includes models ranging from the luxury Cadillac Escalade IQ to the more affordable Chevrolet Equinox EV, has contributed to the surge in demand. Other recent additions include the Cadillac Optiq and high-performance models such as the Chevy Blazer EV SS and Cadillac Lyriq-V. Analysts note that the rush to purchase EVs in recent months has also been driven by consumers seeking to take advantage of federal tax credits before they expire.

“We’re expecting strong demand once again in September. The question, of course, is what’s next?” Duncan Aldred, GM’s president of North America, said in a blog post. “There’s no doubt we’ll see lower EV sales next quarter after tax credits end September 30, and it may take several months for the market to normalize. We will almost certainly see a smaller EV market for a while, and we won’t overproduce.”

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law on July 4, will end all federal EV tax credits on October 1. Higher effective prices following the expiration of incentives are likely to reduce consumer demand, and changes to vehicle efficiency regulations may further influence the market.

GM and other automakers continue to invest in EV technology as part of long-term strategy, but analysts expect U.S. EV sales to moderate in the coming months.
