Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 97% of all new passenger cars purchased by private buyers in Denmark during July, highlighting the country’s accelerating transition toward electric mobility.
According to Mobility Denmark, battery-electric vehicles represented 11,672 of the 14,562 new passenger car registrations recorded during the month, giving EVs an overall market share of 80.2%.
Private Buyers Drive EV Adoption
The strongest momentum came from private consumers, where electric vehicles captured 97% of all new passenger car purchases.
Mobility Denmark said the figures demonstrate that battery-electric vehicles have become the preferred choice for Danish households as purchase prices become increasingly competitive.
Chief Executive Officer Mads Rørvig said the rapid shift reflects the success of Denmark’s incentive policies.
“The electric car has become the natural choice for nearly all Danes when buying a new car. With 97% of new cars for private individuals being electric, it demonstrates how far the green transformation of the automotive market has come.”
He added that lower registration taxes have played a key role in making electric vehicles financially attractive while supporting Denmark’s climate objectives.
Tax Changes Could Slow Growth
Despite the record adoption rate, Mobility Denmark warned that the planned gradual increase in registration tax on electric vehicles from next year could raise prices for many popular EV models.
The industry association said higher purchase costs may reduce the pace of market growth if incentives become less competitive.
One Million EVs in Sight
Even with the planned tax changes, Mobility Denmark expects the number of battery-electric vehicles on Danish roads to reach one million by 2027.
At that milestone, approximately one in every three passenger cars in Denmark is projected to be fully electric.
Rørvig described the achievement as an important milestone in the country’s decarbonisation efforts.
“One million electric cars already next year will be a green milestone for Denmark. When every third passenger car becomes electric, it will have a noticeable impact on CO2 emissions and bring us a big step closer to the climate goals.”
The latest figures place Denmark among Europe’s fastest-growing electric vehicle markets, with private consumer adoption approaching levels previously seen only in neighbouring Norway.
