Chinese automaker Geely said on Wednesday it will introduce its Geely-branded vehicles in the United Kingdom for the first time, beginning with the all-electric EX5 SUV. The model is scheduled to go on sale in the fourth quarter as the company expands its global EV footprint.
The EX5 will lead Geely’s UK entry and serve as the first in a line-up of electric vehicles tailored to local market expectations. The company noted the model is currently undergoing final adjustments. “The EX5, which is still undergoing intensive development work to meet British car buyers’ standards, will be the first in a diverse range of high-quality, accessible vehicles tailored for the UK,” Geely said in a statement.
The UK is seen as a key EV market in Europe, offering a more favorable regulatory environment for Chinese electric vehicle makers compared to the European Union, which recently introduced tariffs on China-made EVs. Britain has not followed suit, making it an attractive destination for expansion.
Geely’s move comes as several Chinese brands ramp up their UK operations, including BYD, Chery’s Omoda and Jaecoo, and Xpeng. While Geely-branded vehicles will be new to UK roads, the company’s Volvo Cars, Polestar, and Lotus brands are already well established in the market.
The automaker has also announced plans to launch the EX5 in several other global markets, including Australia, Brazil, and Poland. Last year, Geely’s global sales climbed 34% to nearly 2.2 million vehicles.
