Geely Automobile Holdings has introduced its new hybrid vehicle, the Galaxy L6 EM-i, to challenge BYD’s growing dominance in the plug-in hybrid vehicle market. The latest model from Geely’s Galaxy lineup, which targets the mainstream hybrid and electric vehicle segment, offers advanced fuel economy and technology features.
The Galaxy L6 EM-i is priced from RMB 89,800 ($12,300) and comes in five variants, with prices ranging from RMB 89,800 to RMB 109,800. As part of an introductory promotion, Geely is offering a discount of RMB 3,000 on all variants until March 31, reducing the starting price of the model to RMB 79,800.

This new offering is equipped with Geely’s Leishen EM-i hybrid system, which was first unveiled by the automaker in October 2024. The system is designed for fuel efficiency and is a direct competitor to BYD’s DM-i hybrid system. The vehicle is powered by a combination of a 82 kW engine and a 160 kW electric motor, with a peak torque of 136 Nm and 262 Nm respectively. This hybrid configuration allows the vehicle to achieve a fuel consumption rate of just 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers, alongside a combined range of over 2,000 kilometers, according to Geely.
The Galaxy L6 EM-i also features two battery options—an 8.5 kWh battery with a range of 60 kilometers and a larger 19.09 kWh battery providing a range of up to 140 kilometers. Both battery configurations are based on lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) technology, which is known for its safety and long life cycle. This model’s efficiency and range capabilities position it as a serious contender in the increasingly competitive hybrid market.

The launch of the Galaxy L6 EM-i further strengthens Geely’s position in the plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle market. The vehicle is part of the broader Galaxy product range, which was first introduced by Geely in February 2023 to cater to the demand for affordable, fuel-efficient hybrid and electric vehicles. This move is seen as a strategic effort by Geely to capture a larger market share in China’s fast-growing green car sector, where BYD currently holds a strong lead.
With its focus on delivering advanced technology and fuel efficiency, the Galaxy L6 EM-i is expected to directly compete with BYD’s recently launched Qin L DM-i, which also uses the latest hybrid technology, the DM 5.0. This new competition underscores the intensifying rivalry between Geely and BYD in China’s electrified vehicle market, as both automakers aim to capture the attention of eco-conscious consumers seeking more affordable hybrid solutions.
