Ford Pro has unveiled plans for an all-wheel drive (AWD) version of its E-Transit Custom electric van, expanding the lineup beyond the current rear-wheel drive variant. The dual-motor configuration is scheduled to launch in spring 2026, with full technical specifications yet to be disclosed.
In a brief statement, the U.S. automaker said the AWD system would feature “two independent front and rear drive units,” designed to deliver maximum torque across all four wheels. The system is aimed at improving traction and stability in challenging driving conditions, including steep gradients and low-friction surfaces such as ice or mud.
“The two independent front and rear drive units provide optimum torque to all four wheels, maximising traction and capability on steep inclines, and enabling enhanced vehicle dynamics, even in extremely slippery ice or muddy driving conditions,” Ford said in its press release.
While Ford has not confirmed battery specifications or range figures for the AWD model, the existing rear-wheel drive E-Transit Custom features a 64 kWh NMC battery, paired with a choice of electric motors offering 100 kW, 160 kW, or 210 kW. That variant delivers a maximum WLTP range of up to 337 kilometres, DC fast charging up to 125 kW, and a towing capacity of 2.3 tonnes.
Ford highlighted that the AWD variant is tailored to commercial users and leisure customers operating in more demanding environments, such as the Nordic, Alpine, and Highlands regions. “We want to expand the productivity of our E-Transit Custom lineup,” the company stated.
The E-Transit Custom also serves as the platform for the Volkswagen e-Transporter, built in partnership with VW Commercial Vehicles in Turkey. The development of an AWD E-Transit Custom raises the prospect of a 4MOTION variant of the e-Transporter in the near future.
