Ferrari and Tesla are two very different automakers, yet they share a common goal – producing high-performance vehicles. While they both achieve this end in different ways, Ferrari is looking to learn from Tesla.
Benedetto Vigna, CEO of Ferrari, has praised Tesla for its role in shaking up the automotive industry, which was dominated by internal combustion engines. Vigna recognizes that Tesla has been a “wake-up call” for the industry, making processes and decisions happen faster.
“Things used to happen too slowly. Tesla shook up the industry and accelerated processes and decisions. They were faster and more agile.” said Vigna

However, Vigna does not see Tesla as a competitor. He views Tesla as a “functional car” meant for transportation, while Ferrari creates “emotional cars” that provide a unique driving experience. Despite this, Ferrari is set to launch its first all-electric vehicle in 2026, as it aims to have EVs make up 40% of its sales by 2030.
When it comes to electrification, Ferrari’s CEO dismisses the notion that the automaker is lagging behind its competitors. He believes that Ferrari should offer its clients a mix of technology, including internal combustion engines, hybrids, and fully electric vehicles, as long as it is feasible. Currently, Ferrari builds two hybrid models, the SF90 and 296 plug-in hybrids, which are available in coupe and convertible body styles.

According to Vigna, the challenge for Ferrari is to find a way to extract the best emotion from the use of electrification technology, while also providing something unique to its clients. He believes that the company’s EV powertrains will provide customers with the same thrills as combustion engines, but in a new and exciting way.
