Fastned has opened two new ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging hubs in North East England, expanding its regional network to 13 locations, the company said.
The new hubs, which became operational earlier this month, add high-power charging capacity near Newcastle and in Sunderland. One site is located close to Callerton Parkway Metro station, one stop from Newcastle Airport, while the other is situated on North Moor Road in Sunderland.

The Newcastle-area hub features 12 charging bays beneath a full charging canopy, making it the larger of the two locations. The Sunderland site launched with six charging bays and includes nearby amenities such as a Costa Coffee and a Greggs, according to the company.
Tom Hurst, UK and Ireland country director at Fastned, said the opening marked a milestone for the firm’s UK operations. “Our first airport location at Newcastle Airport is an exciting milestone,” Hurst said, adding that the new hub would support increased travel during the festive season and contribute to sustainable transport across the region.

Dean Ward, director of commercial at Newcastle Airport, said the charging hub aligns with the airport’s wider investment plans. “The new hub is our latest investment to make charging electric vehicles faster and more reliable for everyone,” Ward said, noting its proximity to the terminal and accessibility for both passengers and local residents.
Fastned said the North East is also home to the company’s first ultra-rapid charging hub in the UK, located at West Wear Street in Sunderland, highlighting the region’s early adoption of high-power EV charging infrastructure.
