The Cross-E project, backed by the European Union, has kicked off with the aim of establishing high-power charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) along key routes and ports across Europe. A total of 911 charging points are planned to be installed in eight countries.
Of these, 838 charging points will deliver 150- and 350-kW charging capacities for cars and light commercial vehicles, while the remaining 73 points will offer 350 kW for heavy commercial vehicles and electric trucks. The cross-border project, subsidized by the EU with 34.45 million euros as part of the AFIF tender, is being executed by the four partners Allego, Emobility Solutions, GreenWay, and Petrol Group.
The charging infrastructure will be set up in Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Belgium, Italy, and the Netherlands. Richard Ferrer, Head of the Alternative Fuels Sector at CINEA, the European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environment Executive Agency, expressed the EU’s commitment, stating, “With this large-scale ambitious project, the European Union is supporting an important new phase to decarbonise mobility in Europe, in particular through the deployment of an electric recharging infrastructure for heavy-duty vehicles, right at the moment the first electric trucks are delivered on the market.”
Mathieu Bonnet, CEO of Allego, highlighted the growing demand for charging infrastructure, stating, “Charging infrastructure is pivotal in enabling a seamless transition to a fully electric fleet. By collaborating with Emobility Solutions, GreenWay, and Petrol who share our vision of a future characterized by emission-free mobility, we are poised to bring this shared vision to fruition.”
The partners plan to invest a total of 130 million euros in high-power charging infrastructure, with the EU providing a grant of 34.45 million euros. The project is expected to be completed by October 2026.
The Cross-E installations will adhere to the European Commission’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), ensuring open access to charging infrastructure. All sites will be accessible to the public 24/7 and will support roaming and freely accessible payment methods such as NFC, credit cards, and app-based payments.
Janos Ungar, CEO of Emobility Solutions, emphasized the importance of regional projects like Cross-E in promoting green transportation, stating, “With the CROSS-E project our aim is to showcase best practices for developing high-power charging HUBs in a smart way, with minimum dependence on the grid by utilizing local PV production and energy storage solutions.”
