Electric vehicle sales in the European Union continued to accelerate in May 2026, with new battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations rising 42.9% year-on-year to more than 203,000 units, according to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).
The result marks the third consecutive month that monthly BEV registrations have exceeded the 200,000-unit threshold, underscoring continued growth in Europe’s electric vehicle market.
Electric Vehicles Reach 20% Market Share
A total of 203,417 battery-electric passenger cars were registered across the EU in May, broadly matching April’s total of 200,117 units. March remains the strongest month of the year so far, with 234,532 BEV registrations.

During the first five months of 2026, battery-electric vehicle registrations reached 950,521 units, representing 20% of all new passenger car registrations in the European Union. At the current pace, cumulative BEV registrations are expected to surpass one million units in June.
ACEA noted that three of the EU’s four largest electric vehicle markets posted strong year-to-date growth:
- Italy: +75.7%
- France: +55.4%
- Germany: +40.9%
Belgium recorded more modest growth of 2.8%, while the Netherlands experienced a 9.7% decline compared with the same period last year.
Hybrids Remain the Largest Segment
Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) remained the most popular powertrain in May, accounting for 37.8% of new car registrations.
Petrol-powered vehicles held a 22.4% market share, followed by battery-electric vehicles at 20%. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) represented 9.7% of registrations, while diesel vehicles accounted for 7.6%.
Combined market share for petrol and diesel vehicles fell to 30.1%, down from 38% a year earlier, continuing the long-term decline of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.
ACEA’s hybrid category includes both full hybrids and mild hybrids, meaning vehicles with limited electrification are counted alongside models capable of significant electric-only driving.
Germany Leads European BEV Market
Germany remained the largest single market for battery-electric vehicles in May, registering 59,969 new BEVs, an increase of 39.3% compared with May 2025.
France recorded one of the strongest performances among major markets, with 37,412 electric vehicle registrations, representing year-on-year growth of 93%.
Other leading markets included:
- Denmark: 15,020 BEVs (+37.3%)
- Italy: 13,274 BEVs (+86.5%)
- Belgium: 12,586 BEVs (+11.0%)
- Netherlands: 12,363 BEVs (+4.9%)
- Spain: 12,049 BEVs (+34.5%)
Tesla Records Strong Recovery
Among automakers, Tesla showed a notable rebound in European sales.
As a pure battery-electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla is one of the few brands whose performance can be directly assessed through ACEA’s registration statistics.
The company registered 21,767 vehicles across Europe, including the EU, EFTA countries and the United Kingdom, in May. This represented a 152% increase compared with the same month last year.
Tesla accounted for approximately 8% of all battery-electric vehicle registrations in the region during the month.
From January through May, Tesla delivered 89,180 vehicles across Europe, a 77% increase year-on-year, averaging around 18,000 registrations per month.
The figures suggest the automaker is regaining momentum following a weaker performance in previous periods, while overall demand for electric vehicles continues to expand across the European market.
