Swedish mining equipment manufacturer Epiroc has received an order from Canada’s Hudbay Minerals for a fleet of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to be deployed at the Lalor Mine in Manitoba, the company said on Thursday.
The order, valued at approximately 100 million Swedish crowns ($9 million), includes battery-electric versions of the Boomer M20 SG longwall drill rig, Scooptram ST18 SG and ST14 SG loaders, and the Minetruck MT42 SG haul truck. The vehicles are scheduled for delivery between the first and third quarter of 2025.

Hudbay Minerals, one of Canada’s largest copper producers, aims to enhance productivity and working conditions at the gold, copper, zinc, and silver mine while reducing emissions. The company has previously trialed Epiroc’s battery-electric Scooptram loader at the site.

“We are happy to support Hudbay Minerals as it takes its next step on its electrification journey,” said Helena Hedblom, President and CEO of Epiroc. “There are clear benefits to our customers that invest in electric equipment. It improves the health of employees, saves ventilation costs, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.”

Hudbay Minerals sees the BEV fleet expansion as integral to its sustainability initiatives. “Expanding our BEV fleet at Lalor is a cornerstone of our Green Revolution strategy, driven by the tangible benefits we’ve seen, including significant greenhouse gas reductions, improved operator satisfaction, and lower maintenance costs,” said Rob Carter, Vice President of Hudbay’s Manitoba Business Unit. “Our strong partnership with Epiroc, who provides exceptional support and truly invests in our success, made this BEV fleet expansion a logical and responsible choice.”
Epiroc has received orders for battery electric vehicles across 39 mining sites worldwide, including operations by Glencore in Canada. A third of the mines that have integrated BEVs have placed repeat orders, the company said. Beyond vehicles, Epiroc offers a range of electrification solutions, including infrastructure, maintenance, and battery recycling services.
