In a report by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), sales of electric vehicles in Astralia broke the record sales of electric cars throughout 2021 by recording sales of 5,149 units.

This figure is small when compared to total new car sales in Australia, which is only 0.5%. However, the level of sales in the electric vehicle segment is claimed to increase by 191.1% compared to 2020 which only recorded sales of 1,769 units.

Interesting fact, FCAI does not include Tesla in its calculations. In fact, Tesla is actually the most popular electric car brand in the world.

Surprisingly, Tesla does not publish the number of its car sales in Australia which is estimated at 10,000 units. Tesla Model 3 is claimed to be the best-selling model there.

Quoted from Drive, the best-selling electric car brand in Australia is MG, a British manufacturer. The most sold model is the MG ZS EV with total sales of 1,388 units as of 2021. This car is claimed to be the cheapest electric SUV at a price of AU$ 44,990.

Following MG, in second place was the luxury car Porsche Taycan which recorded sales of up to 531 units. Despite having a selling price of AU$ 237,000, Porsche managed to record its name as the second best-selling electric car in Australia. In fact, when you look at it again, the selling price is about four times the selling price of the MG car which occupies the first position.

Then there is the Hyundai Kona Electric in third position with 505 units successfully sold. Following in fourth position is the Mercedes-Benz EQA which has sold 367 units. Then in fifth position is the Nissan Leaf by recording sales of the same number as the Mercedes-Benz EQA.

In sixth to tenth positions, there are Hyundai Ioniq Electric (338 units), Mercedes-Benz EQC (298 units), Mini Cooper SE (291 units), Kia Niro EV (217 units), and Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric (207 units). .

In 2022, several new electric cars will also hit the Australian market. One of them is the Kia EV6 SUV, which is the most awaited car for automotive enthusiasts in Australia. In addition, there is a Tesla Model Y which will also be launched in the middle of next year.

Then there is a manufacturer from China, BYD Auto will also hit the Australian market with a small SUV called Yuan Plus. Then there is the most famous car brand in Australia, Toyota will also make a surprise by introducing an electric car unit called the BZ4X.
