The iconic DeLorean DMC-12, made famous by its role as a time machine in the cult film ‘Back to the Future’, is set to enter a new era with an electric car conversion kit developed by British company Electrogenic.
Electrogenic, known for its conversions of classic vehicles like Land Rovers, Jaguars, and Porsches, has now tailored a kit specifically for the DeLorean DMC-12. Originally produced in limited numbers between 1981 and 1982, the DeLorean DMC-12 maintains a devoted following, largely due to its prominent screen presence and enduring design.
Like its other conversion kits, Electrogenic’s adaptation for the DeLorean DMC-12 is designed as a drop-in solution, requiring no modifications such as cutting or welding. The conversion aims to preserve the vehicle’s original weight and distribution while enhancing performance significantly over its original V6 combustion engine.
“We’ve engineered this kit to deliver more than double the power and torque of the original engine, providing the sports car performance that matches its iconic aesthetics,” Electrogenic stated.
The conversion process involves bolting the new electric componentsâ including the engine, inverter, charger, cooling system, and rear battery boxâ onto the existing engine mounts. The kit integrates a supplementary battery pack in place of the fuel tank, preserving the car’s spacious front luggage compartment.
Performance-wise, the electrified DeLorean boasts a 160 kW electric motor generating 310 Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in just 5 seconds, compared to the original 10 seconds. Its 42 kWh battery offers a range of 240 kilometers on a full charge, supported by features like Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Apple CarPlay integration.
