DEKRA has inaugurated a new automotive testing centre in Plymouth, Michigan, aimed at bolstering the evaluation and certification of electric vehicle (EV) components in North America. The Michigan Automotive Testing Laboratory, developed in partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, is the company’s first such facility in the region with a broad portfolio of testing services tailored to the evolving needs of the mobility sector.
The newly launched centre will offer a wide array of services, including electric vehicle component testing, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) evaluations, reliability assessments, and testing for automotive connectivity systems. It will also provide services related to digital trust, cybersecurity, functional safety, and artificial intelligence (AI) certification. DEKRA said the establishment of the facility involved a significant multi-million-dollar investment from its own resources.
“With this center, we are delivering what the future of mobility demands – rigorous testing, seamless certification, and digital trust,” said John Tesoro, President of DEKRA North America. According to the company, the Plymouth location is currently the only test centre in North America offering such an extensive suite of services for the automotive industry.
The Michigan facility strengthens DEKRA’s global network of testing and certification locations, which includes centres in Germany, China, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands. The organisation is also expanding its battery testing capabilities, including plans for dedicated facilities such as the one at the Lausitzring in Germany.
