APM Terminals is expanding the electrification of its container-handling operations at its Elizabeth terminal in New Jersey, ordering 96 electric yard trucks from Orange EV and 34 electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes from Konecranes. The equipment forms part of a broader modernization program at one of the largest container terminals in the Port of New York and New Jersey.

The 96 electric terminal tractors will be supplied by Orange EV, which manufactures Class 8 electric terminal tractors in Kansas City and provides associated charging and servicing solutions.

APM Terminals has not disclosed the battery specifications, charging infrastructure, performance details, order value or planned entry-into-service date for the new electric trucks.
Orange EV said its electric terminal trucks have collectively covered more than 36 million miles, equivalent to about 58 million kilometres, and accumulated 14 million operating hours across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.
The Elizabeth order follows an earlier agreement between APM Terminals and Orange EV. In 2025, APM Terminals ordered 10 electric terminal tractors from the manufacturer for its operations at the Port of Los Angeles.
The terminal will also receive 34 electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes from Konecranes. The Finnish crane manufacturer has supplied equipment to the Elizabeth facility for more than two decades, with some cranes delivered during the early stages of the relationship still operating on a daily basis.

Elizabeth Terminal Modernization
APM Terminals is deploying the electric equipment as part of a wider upgrade of its Elizabeth facility. The modernization program also includes infrastructure improvements, operational changes and employee training covering the operation and maintenance of the new equipment.
Henrik Kristensen, Managing Director of APM Terminals Elizabeth, said the modernization program includes investment in both equipment and employees.

Kristensen added that the company is working with labor partners to develop the skills and expertise required for the next generation of terminal operations.
Konecranes and Orange EV Partnerships
Konecranes said the new agreement extends its relationship with APM Terminals Elizabeth, more than 20 years after the company’s first crane deliveries to the site.

Orange EV CEO Kurt Neutgens said the order reflects increasing adoption of electric terminal trucks among port operators.

Major Container Gateway
APM Terminals Elizabeth handles around 28% of container throughput at the Port of New York and New Jersey. More than 600 vessels call at the terminal each year, while the facility records approximately 800,000 truck visits annually.
The deployment of electric yard trucks and gantry cranes will add to the terminal’s electrified equipment as APM Terminals carries out its broader modernization program.
