Daimler Truck and Volvo Group have officially launched their joint venture, Coretura AB, with the goal of developing a standardized, open software-defined vehicle (SDV) platform for the commercial vehicle sector. The new entity will focus on creating a non-differentiated core and a dedicated operating system to power the next generation of connected trucks and buses.
Coretura’s platform will allow Daimler Truck, Volvo Group, and other potential OEM customers to build stand-alone digital applications, enabling features that can be updated wirelessly over-the-air. These innovations aim to shorten development cycles and improve safety, efficiency, and the user experience for end customers.
“With Coretura, we are setting a clear strategic focus on software development for commercial vehicles. This is a big and really exciting step – not just for us, but for the entire industry and our customers,” said Karin Rådström, President and CEO of Daimler Truck.
Despite being direct competitors, the two companies emphasized that they will continue to produce and market distinct products, including their own software offerings. Coretura will operate independently, providing a shared platform that fosters co-development between manufacturers and technology partners. The first vehicles utilizing Coretura’s software are expected to enter operation before the end of the decade.
“Coretura represents a natural step forward in the evolution of commercial vehicles,” said Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of the Volvo Group. “By leveraging cutting-edge technology and collaborative innovation, we’re setting the stage for a new era of connectivity and efficiency in the industry.”
Daimler Truck and Volvo Group also signaled openness to additional partnerships, inviting suppliers and technology providers to participate in building what they describe as the future software foundation for the commercial vehicle industry.
