China new energy vehicles (NEV) sales reached 3.3 million units in 2021

In 2021, sales of new energy vehicles (NEV) reached 3.3 million units. The sales data was released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Interestingly, in December 2021, it set a new record for monthly sales with 505,000 NEV cars, of which 423,000 were BEVs and 82,000 were PHEVs.

In December 2021 NEV sales, 17.8 percent more NEV was sold than in November 2021. As for the comparison of December 2020 sales, the increase was even 138.9 percent. Overall the NEV market in 2021 reached 15.7 percent overall – up from 5.8 percent in 2020.

From the producer side, BYD still leads all NEV sales (BEV and PHEV). However, in terms of BEV vehicles, Tesla is still at the forefront, although this could be wrong considering that the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV has not provided concrete figures.

Tesla cars produced in China are mostly in the local market (70,847). surprisingly, only 245 units were destined for the export market. BYD for 2021 has exported 563 NEV overseas. Manufacturers that do a lot of export are SAIC with 5,716 units, probably including some MG models for Europe.

For European manufacturers such as Volkswagen, slowly also began to record an increase in sales. In December, VW sold 13,747 of its MEB electric cars, placing it between the Xpeng and Nio. For this year, the Wolfsburg-based company is targeting 140,000 ID. in the Chinese market.
