China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market continued its strong growth trajectory in August, with total sales reaching 1.395 million units, up 26.8 percent from a year earlier and 10.5 percent from July, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).
The figures include both domestic sales and exports, covering battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles. BEVs remained the largest contributor to sales, registering 908,000 units, a 40.5 percent increase year-on-year. PHEV sales reached 487,000 units, up 7.5 percent annually.

Exports remained robust, with 224,000 NEVs shipped abroad in August, marking a 103.6 percent year-on-year surge and the fourth consecutive month of more than 100 percent annual growth. BEV exports accounted for 143,000 units, up 63.4 percent from a year earlier, while PHEV exports jumped 270 percent year-on-year to 81,000 units despite a slight month-on-month decline.
Total vehicle sales in China for August were 2.857 million units, up 16.4 percent year-on-year. The NEV penetration rate reached 48.8 percent, surpassing last year’s 44.8 percent and July’s 48.7 percent. Domestic NEV sales, excluding exports, totaled 1.171 million units, representing an 18.3 percent increase year-on-year and a 13 percent rise from July.
