BYD said cumulative sales of its Dolphin compact electric hatchback have surpassed one million units, making it the third model in the company’s Ocean lineup to reach the milestone after the Song Plus and the Seagull.
The milestone was disclosed on social media by Zhang Zhuo, BYD’s Ocean series sales chief, who said the Dolphin is China’s fastest A0-segment sedan to reach one million units. The model was launched in China on Aug. 29, 2021, as the first vehicle based on BYD’s e-platform 3.0 architecture.

Positioned as one of BYD’s most affordable electric vehicles, the Dolphin currently starts at 99,800 yuan ($14,120) in China. The model measures 4,280 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width and 1,570 mm in height, and is offered with 45.12 kWh and 60.48 kWh battery options, delivering a CLTC range of 410 km to 520 km, targeting urban consumers.

Beyond the domestic market, the Dolphin has also been launched in multiple overseas markets as part of BYD’s global expansion strategy. The automaker’s vehicle portfolio is structured around two main product families: the Ocean series, named after marine life and vessels, and the Dynasty series, which draws inspiration from ancient Chinese dynasties.
The Song Plus SUV became BYD’s first Ocean series model to exceed one million units in cumulative sales in July 2024, followed by the Seagull hatchback, which reached the same mark in July this year. BYD has said the Song Plus will be phased out and replaced by the Sealion 06.
