In light of robust sales figures and a growing demand for its vehicles, Chinese automaker BYD has issued a rallying cry to its compatriot car manufacturers, urging them to collaborate closely and propel China to the forefront of the global automotive industry. This call for unity was underscored by the assertion that existing paradigms should be challenged in pursuit of a brighter future.
BYD’s founder and chairman, Wang Chuanfu, articulated this vision at an event commemorating the automaker’s latest production milestones. During the event, a video presentation showcased the emergence of twelve prominent Chinese car manufacturers, among them FAW Group, Xpeng, Nio, and Li Auto. The video underscored the diverse narratives of these companies while emphasizing a shared trajectory. The presentation culminated with an impassioned call to Chinese car manufacturers to “demolish the old legends and achieve new world-class brands.”
“I believe the era is ripe for Chinese brands to flourish,” asserted Wang Chuanfu. “It is an intrinsic aspiration for all 1.4 billion Chinese individuals to witness the ascendancy of a globally recognized Chinese automotive brand.”
Reactions to BYD’s message have been varied. Nio’s Chief Executive, William Li, lauded the sentiment, expressing pride in the progress of China’s auto industry. “I am filled with pride for China’s automotive sector,” Li stated on Weibo. “We can glean valuable lessons from BYD’s achievements.”
Li Xiang, the CEO of Li Auto, echoed these sentiments, extending his admiration. “We pay homage to BYD! Let us extend our encouragement to every contributor in this new era of sustainable transportation.”
However, Wang Yuanli, Chief Executive of Great Wall Motor, conveyed a more tempered perspective in response to BYD’s call for collaboration. He shared an excerpt from an editorial authored by a commentator from China’s Auto Business Review on Weibo. The commentary questioned the feasibility of unity during this pivotal juncture. “In such a crucial phase, can Chinese automakers truly unite?” Wang Yuanli inquired. “If we merely pay lip service to collaboration while harboring animosity, it might be more prudent to engage in healthy competition first.”
As the landscape of the Chinese automotive industry continues to evolve, BYD’s appeal for collective effort and innovation stands as a reflection of its commitment to steering the nation’s car brands toward a globally influential position. The responses from industry peers underscore the complexity of this endeavor and the diverse perspectives that shape it.
