BYD, the prominent Chinese automaker, has introduced the new U8 Premium Edition SUV in China, showcasing a blend of cutting-edge technology and luxury features.

The U8 Premium Edition, built on a body-on-frame platform, exhibits a distinctive exterior design reminiscent of the iconic Defender, complemented by striking 20- or 22-inch wheels. The vehicle’s appearance boasts a ‘floating’ roof, flush-mounted door handles, and an octagonal spare tire cover.

Inside, the U8 Premium Edition offers an array of tech-savvy amenities. The driver and front passenger are treated to expansive 23.6-inch displays, accompanied by a 12.8-inch infotainment system with a portrait orientation. Furthermore, the SUV features a dual-screen rear entertainment system and an integrated display in the second-row armrest.

Luxury abounds in the U8 Premium Edition’s interior, featuring Nappa leather seats and elegant Sapele wood trim. The vehicle includes three high-speed wireless smartphone chargers, a starlit sunroof, and a premium 22-speaker audio system. Notably, it boasts a 70-inch augmented reality head-up display, seats equipped with a “10-point matrix hot stone massage” function, a fragrance diffuser, and a refrigerator that can operate for 12 hours after the vehicle is turned off.

The U8 Premium Edition is equipped with four electric motors that deliver a remarkable combined output of 1,184 horsepower (883 kW / 1,200 PS). This substantial power enables the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in a mere 3.6 seconds.

While the U8’s impressive specifications are apparent, it features a somewhat modest 110 kW DC fast charging capability. Nonetheless, BYD claims that the battery can charge from 30% to 80% in as little as 18 minutes. Additionally, the model offers vehicle-to-load capability and an impressive CLTC range of up to 621 miles (1,000 km).

The U8 Premium Edition includes notable features such as tank turns, “tire blowout stabilization,” and an adjustable suspension that can provide an extra 5.9 inches (150 mm) of ground clearance. BYD also highlights the vehicle’s ability to remain afloat for up to 30 minutes in extreme conditions, such as flash floods or off-road water obstacles, while maintaining stability and control.

Equipped with an array of 38 sensors, including LiDAR units, millimeter-wave radars, ultrasonic sensors, and cameras, the U8 Premium Edition offers advanced driver assistance systems. These features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Parking Assist, and Automated Valet Parking. Future over-the-air updates will introduce Highway Driving Assist and City Navigation Autopilot.

Deliveries of the U8 Premium Edition are scheduled to commence next month, with pricing starting at ¥1,098,000 ($150,666 / £121,388 / €140,377). This launch signifies BYD’s commitment to offering high-performance electric vehicles with advanced technology and luxurious comforts.
