BYD Launches Yangwang U9 Electric Supercar: Hits 0-100 km/h in 2.36 Seconds, Priced at $233,500

BYD’s premium brand Yangwang has unveiled its latest offering, the U9 electric supercar, at a launch event in Shanghai. This marks the second production vehicle from the new brand, following the U8 off-road SUV.

The Yangwang U9, priced at RMB 1.68 million ($233,500), is a 2-seat model that boasts impressive specifications. It measures 4,966 mm in length, 2,029 mm in width, and 1,295 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm.

Powered by a battery electric vehicle (BEV) with four motors, each delivering a peak power of 240 kW and a combined peak power of 960 kW, the U9 offers remarkable performance. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.36 seconds, surpassing the performance of a model with a 12-cylinder engine.

The U9 is based on the 800 V high-voltage platform and features an 80-kWh-capacity blade battery, providing a combined CLTC range of 450 kilometers. It also supports simultaneous charging with two charging guns, allowing for a rapid charge from 30 percent to 80 percent in as little as 10 minutes.

Equipped with BYD’s DiSus-X body control system, the U9 offers advanced features such as vehicle dancing, jumping, and driving even with just three wheels. The system is capable of up to 36 kW of power, with the suspension offering a maximum adjustable travel of 75 mm.

Inside, the U9 features BYD’s DiLink cockpit system and DiPilot assisted driving system, along with a 5G chip based on a 4 nm process co-developed by BYD and Qualcomm. The car also offers various built-in modes that allow owners to demonstrate features such as vehicle dancing and tank turns.

Customers interested in the Yangwang U9 can place an order by paying a deposit of RMB 300,000, which becomes non-refundable once the order takes effect. The vehicle comes with a six-year or 150,000-kilometer vehicle warranty, as well as a lifetime warranty on the battery, motor, and electronic controls for the first owners.

Yangwang’s offline stores are currently available in 36 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, with new stores set to open in 11 additional cities.

The launch of the U9 follows the debut of the U8 and the official unveiling of the Yangwang brand on January 5, 2023. BYD announced that all future models under the Yangwang brand would be built on the e⁴ technology platform, with the U8 being the brand’s first production vehicle.
