Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant BYD has joined forces with Australian partner EV Direct to introduce their newest electric vehicle (EV), the Dolphin, in Australia. The Dolphin was officially launched at a special event on June 22, as stated in a press release by BYD. This move signifies BYD’s commitment to expanding its presence in the Australian market and promoting a sustainable future.
The Dolphin is available in three versions in Australia, each with different starting prices. The entry-level model starts at A$38,890 ($26,000), while the higher-spec versions are priced at A$44,890 and A$49,990 respectively. In China, the Dolphin is offered in three variations as well, with starting prices ranging from RMB 116,800 ($16,200) to RMB 136,800.

As an A0-class pure electric vehicle, the BYD Dolphin boasts dimensions of 4,290 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. These specifications demonstrate the car’s compact and efficient design.
BYD’s introduction of the Dolphin in Australia aligns with its strategy to diversify its product lineup and cater to the growing demand for EVs in the country. BYD believes that the Dolphin will contribute to Australia’s transition towards a greener automotive landscape.
The Dolphin was initially launched in China on August 29, 2021, making it the inaugural model in BYD’s Ocean series and the first vehicle built on its e-Platform 3.0. In May, BYD recorded impressive NEV sales figures, with a total of 240,220 units sold. Out of these, the Dolphin accounted for 30,679 units.

This is not the first time BYD has made waves in Australia. In February 2022, the company introduced the Yuan Plus in China and simultaneously commenced pre-orders for the Australian market under the name Atto 3. By August of that year, BYD announced the shipment of 1,000 Atto 3 vehicles to Australia, marking the arrival of BYD’s passenger cars in the country. The Atto 3 has already gained popularity in various international markets such as Singapore, Europe, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates.
The Dolphin has also been embraced in several markets worldwide, including Japan, Colombia, Europe, and Ecuador. Its availability in these regions illustrates BYD’s commitment to expanding its global reach and providing sustainable transportation solutions on a wider scale.
