BYD has officially entered the Romanian passenger car market as part of its continued expansion across Europe, the company announced on Monday.
The automaker introduced four models at its launch event on May 8 in Bucharest, including the Sealion 07 EV, renamed locally as the Sealion 7; the all-electric sedan Seal; the hybrid SUV Song Plus DM-i, rebranded as the Seal U DM-i; and the compact electric SUV Yuan UP, now known as the Atto 2 in Romania.

“Each new market in Europe is crucial for BYD as we aim to make sustainable technologies more accessible to a wider range of users,” said Stella Li, executive vice president of BYD. The company opened its first retail store in the Romanian capital through partnerships with local dealers Tiriac Auto and DAB Auto.
BYD plans to establish over 30 sales outlets in Romania by the end of 2025 as it scales its retail network in the region.
The automaker halted production of fully internal combustion engine vehicles in March 2022, shifting its focus entirely to plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) technologies. In April 2024, BYD reported sales of 380,089 NEVs, marking a 21.3% increase year-on-year. Of these, 372,615 were passenger vehicles and 7,474 were commercial units.

The company also recorded overseas sales of 79,086 vehicles in April, a 92.8% increase from the previous year and up 8.8% from March, setting a new monthly record.
BYD’s recent moves in Europe include market entries into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on April 16, and Croatia on April 28, where similar models were launched. The expansion forms part of the company’s broader strategy to grow its footprint amid intensifying global competition in the EV sector.
