Bremer Straßenbahn AG (BSAG) has begun operating 50 new electric articulated buses from Daimler Buses and Irizar, marking a significant step in the city’s transition to zero-emission public transport. The rollout coincides with the completion of the conversion of BSAG’s Blumenthal depot for full electric bus operations.
The new buses—35 all-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro Gs and 15 Irizar iebus18s—will operate on Line 90 in the Bremen-North region. The vehicles were delivered gradually over the first half of the year, beginning with the arrival of the first Irizar model in January. These new additions expand BSAG’s electric fleet to a total of 70 units, including 20 standard 12-metre eCitaros already in service.
BSAG’s Blumenthal depot underwent extensive modernization beginning in spring 2024. The overhaul included the installation of charging infrastructure, updates to maintenance facilities, and other technical upgrades to support the transition to battery-electric operations.
“The first major milestone has been reached in the long-term conversion of local public transport in Bremen to electromobility,” said Bremen’s Mobility Senator Özlem Ünsal. “In doing so, we are not only fulfilling the environmental protection goals of the federal and state governments. We are also increasing the quality of life in our city with modern, low-emission public transport – with cleaner air and less traffic noise.”
BSAG’s goal is to fully electrify its fleet by 2035. The deployment of the articulated buses represents a significant step toward this objective, with nearly one-third of its fleet now operating without local emissions. The electric buses are expected to reduce traffic-related pollution and noise in the region while contributing to Germany’s broader climate and transport goals.
