Luxury car buyers in Germany are increasingly turning to electric vehicles, according to the latest market analysis for January. The trend is exemplified by the success of BMW’s latest 7 Series, with the fully-electric i7 variant accounting for a significant 43% of all 7 Series sales that month.

While some may not be surprised by this shift given Tesla’s dominance as the top-selling luxury car brand in the previous year, it’s worth noting that the i7’s success comes against competitors like the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes EQS.

The i7 has received positive reviews and is arguably the best version in the 7 Series family, thanks to its exceptionally smooth powertrain and the inherent smooth drive of electric vehicles. Interestingly, the second most popular variant was the 740d, which is the diesel-powered version and the cheapest to purchase and run. This is surprising given that the i7 is actually the most expensive iteration.

In contrast, plug-in hybrids accounted for just 15% of all ICE-powered 7 Series sales in January. While it’s important to note that these statistics are only for one month, it’s possible that they indicate the beginning of a trend. Only time will tell if this shift towards electric vehicles continues in the luxury car market.
