BMW Group has confirmed that it will manufacture the Neue Klasse i3 and iX3 electric vehicles at its San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico beginning in 2027, while also producing sixth-generation high-voltage battery packs at the site.
The announcement comes as the automaker continues an €800 million expansion of the facility, which will become one of the company’s global production hubs for its next-generation electric vehicle platform.

Plant Expansion Supports Neue Klasse Production
BMW said construction is progressing on schedule and includes an expansion of more than 110,000 square meters at the San Luis Potosí plant.
More than €500 million of the total investment has been allocated to a new battery assembly facility, which will occupy over 80,000 square meters and produce the company’s sixth-generation high-voltage battery packs for the Neue Klasse models.
The automaker first announced plans in 2023 to manufacture Neue Klasse electric vehicles in Mexico from 2027 but had not previously identified which models would be produced at the site.
The company has now confirmed that production will include both the all-electric i3 and iX3.

Mexico Joins Global Neue Klasse Network
San Luis Potosí will become one of four BMW production plants worldwide selected to manufacture Neue Klasse vehicles.
The other manufacturing locations are Debrecen in Hungary, Munich in Germany and Shenyang in China.
The Mexican facility has also been selected as one of five global sites responsible for assembling BMW’s sixth-generation high-voltage batteries, reinforcing its role in the company’s global electrification strategy.
BMW said the dual production of electric vehicles and battery packs at the same location is intended to support more efficient manufacturing as the company prepares to expand its portfolio of next-generation battery-electric vehicles.
The announcement was made as BMW marked the tenth anniversary of the foundation stone laying ceremony for the San Luis Potosí plant, which has become a key manufacturing hub within the automaker’s global production network.
