EV infrastructure provider Believ plans to install 6,000 public electric vehicle charge points across Suffolk, marking one of the UK’s most extensive on-street charging initiatives. The phased installation is scheduled to begin this summer, with the first units expected to go live in early 2025.
The rollout will target residential streets, community hubs, and other public spaces, with a focus on areas lacking off-street parking – a significant barrier to EV adoption in many parts of the UK. Believ will handle the installation, operation, and maintenance of the charge points under a fully funded model. Asset ownership will remain with Liberty Charge, Believ’s sister company.

“This initiative with Suffolk County Council demonstrates our shared commitment to making EV charging accessible, convenient and inclusive – particularly for residents without off-street parking,” said Chris Hayton, Director of Corporate Affairs at Believ. “The scale of the rollout will make a tangible impact on EV uptake across the county.”
Believ will install a mix of AC and DC chargers tailored to local demand. Most of the units will be bollard-style kerbside chargers for long-stay and overnight use, with some fast chargers planned for car park locations. All chargers will be powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity.

The project is being delivered in partnership with Suffolk County Council and is partly funded by the UK Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund. Believ says it will invest over £16 million in the deployment.
Around 40 per cent of households in Suffolk lack access to private driveways or garages, according to the council. Officials say improving access to charging infrastructure is essential for meeting both local climate targets and national decarbonisation goals. The county aims to become carbon neutral by 2030.

With this initiative, Suffolk positions itself as a leading county in on-street EV charging. The council views the project as a model for other local authorities seeking to address infrastructure challenges as the UK advances toward net-zero transport.
