BC Hydro has expanded its public electric vehicle (EV) charging network to more than 700 ports across British Columbia after taking over 28 sites from the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Transit. The move is expected to add 88 new charging ports, including both fast and Level 2 chargers, by the end of 2025.
The newly transferred locations are positioned at highway rest stops and major travel corridors, with integration into BC Hydro’s energy-based pricing model approved by the B.C. Utilities Commission. Of the 88 new ports, 33 are fast chargers rated at 50 kilowatts, 16 are 25-kilowatt fast chargers, and 39 are Level 2 chargers.

BC Hydro currently operates 709 ports at 160 sites and aims to reach 800 ports by spring 2026. The utility also plans to introduce its first 400-kilowatt fast charger later this year. Over the past 12 months, the company has tripled the size of its public charging network, adding 418 new ports.
“By transferring these 28 electric vehicle charging sites to BC Hydro, we’re streamlining our focus on maintaining a safe and efficient transportation system for all British Columbians,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Transportation and Transit.

Charlotte Mitha, President and CEO of BC Hydro, added: “As electric vehicle adoption increases across B.C., we’re investing in the infrastructure needed to support that growth. This expansion strengthens our public charging network and ensures EV drivers benefit from BC Hydro’s reliable service, including 24/7 customer support and access to clean, affordable electricity.”
Once fully integrated, BC Hydro will oversee more than 90% of the province’s public EV charging network.
