Avatr Technology, the electric vehicle brand backed by Changan Automobile, CATL and Huawei, launched the updated Avatr 12 sedan on Thursday, expanding its lineup to include both battery electric and extended-range variants, while also addressing online scrutiny over the model’s aerodynamic performance.
The 2025 Avatr 12 comes in two extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants and four battery electric vehicle (BEV) versions, with prices ranging from RMB 269,900 to RMB 429,900 ($37,360–$59,500). The entry-level pricing is slightly higher than last year’s BEV-only model, which started at RMB 265,800. A temporary discount of RMB 10,000 is being offered on all variants until May 31.

The EREV models feature a single-motor rear-wheel drive setup with 231 kW of peak power and 367 Nm of torque, delivering 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.7 seconds. These are powered by CATL’s Freevoy Battery—launched in October 2024—offering 245 km of electric-only range and a total range of 1,155 km under the CLTC standard. The BEV variants include one single-motor version with 237 kW and 396 Nm and three dual-motor options capable of 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, with ranges between 705 km and 755 km.
Avatr first introduced the 12 in November 2023, and it received an update in March 2024. The latest version becomes the third model in the Avatr lineup to offer both BEV and EREV configurations, following the Avatr 07 and the updated Avatr 11 SUVs.

The launch comes days after a video posted by a car blogger questioned the Avatr 12’s drag coefficient. The video was reshared on X by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, prompting a public rebuttal from Avatr. The company stated on Weibo that the claims were inaccurate and extended an invitation to Musk to attend a wind tunnel test of the vehicle.
