Austrian Post will transition to fully CO2-free delivery operations in Vienna by the end of 2025, using only electric vehicles, bicycles, and on-foot couriers. The company aims to make Vienna the first major European city with entirely emissions-free last-mile delivery of letters, parcels, newspapers, and brochures.
The initiative builds on Austrian Post’s ongoing sustainability strategy, which includes the deployment of roughly 700 electric vehicles already in operation in Vienna—over half of the current 1,100-vehicle fleet in the city. An additional 400 electric vehicles will be introduced by the end of 2025, with the remaining charging infrastructure installed within the year.
“With around 700 electric vehicles, more than half of our fleet in Vienna is already electric. By the end of the year, we will install the remaining charging stations and put a further 400 electric vehicles into operation in Vienna,” said Peter Umundum, Board Member for Parcel & Logistics at Austrian Post. “By the end of the year, more than two million residents will receive last-mile deliveries CO2-free – this is unique in Europe!”
The effort involves a €32 million investment in vehicles and infrastructure. Austrian Post currently operates 17 city-based delivery hubs in Vienna for small-format mail and three parcel centers, with a fourth located in nearby Hagenbrunn. More than 1,500 delivery employees will contribute to the carbon-free deliveries, using a combination of electric transport, bikes, and foot routes.
Nationwide, Austrian Post has pursued a large-scale shift to e-mobility since 2022, acquiring around 1,000 electric vehicles annually. Its total electric delivery fleet now numbers approximately 5,000 vehicles, half of its 2030 target of 10,000. Vehicle suppliers include Renault, MAN, and Maxus.
In parallel, the company is expanding its renewable energy capacity. Photovoltaic systems with over 18 MWp of capacity have been installed at 34 Austrian Post sites, supplying more than 20% of the company’s total electricity consumption.
“Even in challenging times, we remain firmly on course and continue to pursue our sustainability strategy,” said Walter Oblin, CEO of Austrian Post. “With the comprehensive switch to e-mobility in Vienna, our federal capital will become the first European metropolis of this size where all postal items are delivered exclusively on foot, by bicycle or electrically. This investment underlines our commitment and marks an important milestone on the path to a climate-friendly future.”
