Aptera Motors, a startup focused on electric vehicles (EVs), has revealed its plans to start production of its three-wheel solar EV before the end of 2022.
The company has unveiled a production-intent prototype called Delta, which represents the culmination of improvements made during the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma development phases.
The Delta prototype will pave the way for the Launch Edition Aptera, the company’s first and most exclusive model. Launch Edition Aptera models will have a single configuration, which will allow for more efficient production.
Aptera will unveil more details about its production plans, including specifications and “revolutionary capabilities,” during a livestream webinar on January 20. The company has stated that its goal is to make solar mobility a reality for everyone.
Aptera has released photos and a video of its production-intent Delta prototype, which appears to be largely similar to the previous Gamma iteration. The video shows the assembly of the Delta prototype, including its aerodynamic bodywork and minimalist two-seat cabin with a steering yoke and central touchscreen.
The dashboard also features redundant physical transmission switches and a single stalk on the left side of the steering column for lights and side-view video screens. Aptera has signed deals with Maxeon Solar Technologies and EVE Energy for solar panels and lithium-ion battery cells, respectively.
The company has also partnered with C.P.C., an Italian manufacturer that produces parts for luxury car brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren, for the production of the carbon fiber molded body. Aptera plans to integrate the North American Charging Standard into its vehicles.
The company has reportedly received 39,000 preorders for its first vehicle, representing over $1.4 billion in potential revenue.
