U.S. battery swapping company Ample and Spanish energy firm Repsol said on Tuesday they have expanded their electric mobility partnership in Madrid, adding three new modular battery swapping stations at Repsol service stations across the city.
The first of the new sites, located in Montecarmelo, is already operational, while two more on Avenida de Andalucía and in the Barajas district will open soon. They will join Ample’s existing station on Manuel Luna Street, creating broader coverage for drivers in the Spanish capital. The initiative is part of Repsol’s wider mobility strategy and is backed by its investment arm, Repsol Corporate Venturing, which is also an investor in Ample.
Ample’s technology enables an electric vehicle to exchange a depleted battery for a fully charged one in about five minutes. The company says its compact modular stations can be deployed in as little as three days, making them suitable for dense urban areas. The system is designed to be vehicle-agnostic and is already being used by Stellantis models adapted for compatibility, as well as by shared mobility fleets operated by Free2move.
“This partnership demonstrates how battery swapping can scale in major European cities, enabling fleets and consumers to adopt electric mobility without compromise,” Ample CEO Khaled Hassounah said.
Spain aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, and the expansion of battery swapping stations is seen as one way to support faster EV adoption by reducing charging times and improving convenience for urban drivers.
