UK bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis has delivered the first 12 of 30 electric double-decker buses to Arriva London for use on Transport for London (TfL) routes, marking the company’s debut in the capital’s electric bus fleet. The initial vehicles are now operating on the SL6 Superloop route, connecting West Croydon in South London to Russell Square in the city centre.

A further 18 Enviro400EV units will soon enter service on TfL route 196. All 30 buses will be operated by Arriva London, one of TfL’s contracted operators.

“This delivery of our first TfL-specification Enviro400EV is a milestone in the roll-out of our next generation of electric buses and brings a new bus for London to the streets of the capital,” said Neil Gladstone, National Account Manager for Alexander Dennis. “Initial operation has been trouble-free and monitoring through our comprehensive AD Connect telematics shows that the buses are performing as expected.”

The Enviro400EV features a 472kWh battery and Voith Electrical Drive system. Testing has shown energy consumption at 0.67kWh per kilometre. The model complies with TfL’s Bus Safety Standard, offering features such as blind spot monitoring, intelligent speed assistance, and redesigned front geometry. Grayson Thermal Systems supplies the HVAC and energy management systems to support efficiency and passenger comfort.

Backed by a 14-year, one-million-kilometre warranty, the Enviro400EV has already been deployed in other UK cities including Coventry and Liverpool. Its rollout in London is tailored to meet TfL’s specific operational and safety requirements, which also influence the design of the smaller Enviro200EV variant.
