The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has placed an order for 58 Enviro400EV electric double-decker buses from British manufacturer Alexander Dennis, with delivery scheduled before the end of the year, the company announced.

The Enviro400EV was developed to meet Transport for London (TfL) specifications and comes with a standard 472 kWh battery, accommodating up to 87 passengers.

A smaller 354 kWh variant can transport up to 96 passengers, though Alexander Dennis has not disclosed which version Liverpool has ordered. The manufacturer highlighted the model’s energy efficiency, stating it consumes “only 0.67kWh/km over the UK Bus Cycle” and delivers a “market-leading 97% grid-to-wheel charging efficiency.”

The order follows Liverpool’s announcement in September 2024 of plans to acquire 50 electric buses. Funding was secured through the second round of the UK Department for Transport’s Zero-Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA 2) program. While the total cost was not disclosed, Liverpool had previously allocated £26 million for 50 new electric double-deckers.

“Buses are the backbone of our public transport network – around 80% of all public transport journeys in our region are taken by bus,” said Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region. “But for too long, our communities have been left with a second-class service that simply doesn’t work for them. That’s why we’re taking back control of our buses and putting the public back at the heart of public transport.”
