Aarbus, the public transport operator in Aarhus, has signed a contract with Solaris for the delivery of 50 Urbino 18 electric buses, marking a major step in the Danish city’s transition toward fossil-free public transport by 2030.
The agreement, signed on October 23, will see the new articulated electric buses enter service in 2027, with an option for an additional 36 units that could be delivered in 2028. If the full order is exercised, a total of 86 Solaris Urbino 18 electric buses would operate in and around Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city.

Each bus will be equipped with Solaris High Energy batteries offering a capacity of more than 700 kWh, designed to support long daily routes with efficient charging performance. Deliveries for the initial 50 units are scheduled for the first half of 2027, Solaris said.
“Cooperation between Danish operators and Solaris dates back to 2006,” Solaris stated in a press release. “To date, the manufacturer has delivered over 350 buses to the Danish market, including 100 electric vehicles, making a significant contribution to the country’s transition toward low- and zero-emission public transport. Aarhus was the first city in Denmark to introduce electric Solaris buses into regular operation.”

The city has not yet confirmed whether new charging infrastructure will be added for the incoming fleet. Some of the Urbino 18 buses delivered in 2023 are currently charged via cable at the Aarbus depot, while older 2021 models still use a top-down pantograph system. Aarhus’s broader mobility plan targets a fully fossil-free public transport network by 2030.
