Tesla’s Megafactory in Shanghai is on track to begin shipments by the first quarter of 2025, advancing Tesla’s expansion in energy storage manufacturing. Local media outlet IT Home reported last month that the factory, currently over 60% complete, has passed the halfway mark in construction—a milestone reached just five months after Tesla broke ground on May 23, 2024.
The facility, located on a 49.4-acre site in Shanghai’s Lingang area near Giga Shanghai, will eventually have an annual production capacity of 10,000 Megapack batteries, equivalent to roughly 40 GWh of energy storage.
During its Q3 earnings call, Tesla projected an initial run rate of 20 GWh from the Shanghai site, underscoring its aim to meet growing demand. “Our goal is to replicate and scale our Megapack production success globally,” Tesla noted in its earnings update, emphasizing the strategic role of the Shanghai facility in boosting production.
Tesla’s Energy division reported a record gross margin of 30.5% in Q3 2024, with steady production from the Lathrop Megafactory, which currently manufactures around 200 Megapacks weekly. The upcoming Shanghai Megafactory, IT Home highlighted, is poised to enhance Tesla’s energy business once shipments begin, aligning with the company’s ambitious global growth targets.
