Volvo Group is establishing Volvo Mining, a dedicated business entity that will bring together the group’s trucks, construction equipment and autonomous solutions for mining customers and their contractors. The new entity is scheduled to launch on January 1, 2027, and will operate within Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE).
The initiative is intended to consolidate the group’s mining-related products, services and expertise under a single business structure. Volvo Mining will manage the product and service portfolio for the global mining segment, supported by dedicated financial resources, and coordinate research projects across Volvo Group.
Its initial focus will be mining customers and contractors in Sweden, Norway and Finland, with plans for phased expansion into additional markets.
Combining Equipment and Autonomous Technology
Volvo Mining will bring together conventional mining equipment and vehicles with autonomous solutions developed by Volvo Autonomous Solutions. The structure is intended to provide mining operators with a more integrated offering across excavation, loading, hauling and transportation.
Mining operations often require multiple types of machinery to work together in demanding environments, including remote sites. Volvo Group said the sector’s focus on productivity, emissions and safety is increasing demand for solutions that coordinate equipment and operations.
Volvo Autonomous Solutions has reported more than three million metric tons hauled autonomously at mining and quarrying sites in Europe. The company has also assembled its first autonomous mining truck at Volvo’s Säffle plant in Sweden.
The new entity will combine these autonomous capabilities with Volvo Group’s broader portfolio of trucks and construction equipment.
“By combining our proven autonomous technology and operational experience with Volvo Group’s broader expertise, portfolio and customer relationships, we can provide integrated solutions that also deliver measurable value for mining customers – improving safety, productivity and efficiency across their operations,” said Nils Jaeger, president of Volvo Autonomous Solutions.
Leadership and Launch Plans
Per-Erik Lindström, currently senior vice president of Volvo Trucks International, has been appointed head of Volvo Mining, effective January 1, 2027.
The entity will initially concentrate on Nordic mining operations before expanding into other markets in phases. Volvo Group has not disclosed a detailed expansion schedule or specific financial targets for the new business.
“Mining has been an important part of the Volvo Group for decades, but the industry’s growing significance calls for an even greater level of focus,” said Melker Jernberg, president of Volvo CE.
The establishment of Volvo Mining creates a dedicated organizational structure for the group’s mining business, bringing equipment, services and autonomous technology under a single entity as it develops its offering for the sector.
