Ionna, the North American fast-charging joint venture formed by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, has started construction of its first charging site, or ‘Rechargery,’ in Apex, North Carolina. The station, located at a former petrol station site, will feature ten covered fast-charging stations offering up to 400 kW of power through both CCS and NACS connectors.
The site is designed with a focus on customer comfort, with amenities such as secure bathroom access, coffee service, food and beverage options, and Wi-Fi, allowing drivers to relax or work while their vehicle charges. Outdoor facilities, including pet-friendly areas, will also be available.
According to BMW, the facility will restore part of Apex’s historic district and is just a short distance from Ionna’s headquarters in Durham, North Carolina. While no official opening date has been confirmed, the company previously announced that the first site would be operational by the end of 2024.
In addition to starting construction, Ionna has also announced a key appointment to its leadership team. Jackie Slope has been named Chief Technology Officer, where she will oversee the deployment of hardware, software, and technologies aimed at enhancing the customer experience.
Slope joins Ionna from the sports and entertainment industry, bringing a focus on customer-centric innovation. “I am excited to find ways to innovate and elevate the charging experience by serving the customer above all else in this new and exciting industry,” said Slope in a statement.
