Tesla Introduces Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive Model Y, Discontinues Standard Range RWD

Tesla has unveiled a new variant of the Model Y – the Long Range Rear-wheel drive – while discontinuing the previous Rear-wheel drive (RWD) model, which had been the most affordable Model Y in the U.S.

In recent weeks, Tesla’s prices have been fluctuating, with the Model Y receiving a $2,000 discount just two weeks ago. This discount brought the price down to its lowest ever, particularly when factoring in tax credits.

However, Tesla has now replaced the standard range RWD Model Y with the new Long Range RWD model, priced $2,000 higher.

The new Long Range RWD Model Y, with a base price of $44,990, is now listed on Tesla’s website. Like its predecessor, it qualifies for the U.S. EV tax credit, making it available for $37,500 for eligible buyers.

The Long Range RWD model began shipping in Europe early last month, so its arrival in the U.S. is not unexpected.

Compared to the old model, the new Long Range RWD comes with a larger battery, providing a range of 320 miles instead of the previous 260 miles. While the increased range is a significant improvement for a relatively small price increase, some customers may miss the lower base price of the previous model.

Prior to April 19, the Model Y SR RWD was sold at the same price as the current LR RWD model. Despite temporary discounts in the first quarter of the year, customers are essentially getting a longer-range vehicle for a price similar to what it might have been in recent months.

In addition to the model change, Tesla has introduced a new paint option called Quicksilver for $2,000, available only on Long Range AWD and Performance models. This color, a lighter gray/silver with depth, has been popular in Europe since 2022 and is now available in the U.S.

Furthermore, Tesla has revealed that owners who purchased the 260-mile battery actually received a vehicle with additional hidden battery capacity. Tesla has previously employed this strategy to simplify manufacturing, producing a single battery pack but limiting some through software to lower ranges.

Tesla plans to offer software unlocks for owners who purchased the 260-mile SR RWD, enabling them to add an additional 40-60 miles of range, depending on the battery cells, for an additional $1,500-2,000. However, this plan is subject to regulatory approval.
