Norway Records a 281% Jump in Electric Car Registrations, Totaling 4,717 in January 2024

Norway witnessed a substantial uptick in new electric car registrations during January 2024, with 4,717 units recorded, according to data from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

This figure represents a significant surge of 281.3% compared to the same month in the previous year. However, it’s worth noting that January 2023 experienced subdued activity, reflected in the overall car market’s growth of 175.5% across all drive systems in the current January.

The January 2024 registrations indicate a strong start to the year, adding 3,263 more cars to the roads compared to the same month in the prior year, resulting in a total of 5,122 new registrations. Notably, the share of electric vehicles (EVs) in the overall market was 94%, with 94 plug-in hybrids joining the 4,717 new electric cars.

To provide context, an average of 8,715 electric cars were registered monthly in 2023, making the 4,717 electric cars from last month a below-average start for the year. Despite this, the market is still showing a robust inclination towards electric vehicles.

The Tesla Model Y continued its dominance in the model ranking, securing the top spot with 962 new registrations, followed by the Hyundai Kona (282) and the Nissan Leaf (263). The Tesla Model Y claimed a market share of 19%, with the other two cars securing 5.5% and 5.1% respectively.

Looking back at the statistics for the full year 2023, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration reported 104,590 new registrations for electric cars and 10,169 for plug-in hybrids. Electric cars commanded an impressive 82.4% share of all new car registrations during this period.

The Tesla Model Y emerged as the standout performer for the year, notching up 23,085 new registrations in Norway, garnering an 18% market share for 2023, up from 10% in 2022. Other notable models included the VW ID.4, the Skoda Enyaq, and the Toyota bZ4X, each contributing to the strong market presence of electric vehicles in Norway.
