In a move toward embracing cleaner transportation options, Iveco has revealed its intention to produce and market battery-electric and fuel-cell trucks under its own name. This decision is not entirely surprising, given the company’s previous involvement with electric trucks in collaboration with other manufacturers since 2019.
The recent unveiling of the Iveco Heavy Duty BEV at the Truck Grand Prix held at the NĆ¼rburgring further solidifies their commitment to sustainable innovations. The Iveco S-Way platform serves as the foundation for both battery-electric and fuel-cell variants (Iveco Heavy Duty FCEV) due to its modular architecture, accommodating different drive technologies. Both models are equipped with an FPT Industrial electric axle and Proterra batteries, while the Heavy Duty FCEV utilizes fuel cell technology from Bosch.
The Heavy Duty BEV boasts a respectable range of up to 500 kilometers on a single battery charge, powered by nine packs with a total capacity of 738 kWh. Charging at 350 kW enables the battery to reach an 80% charge in approximately 90 minutes, offering practicality for long-distance journeys. The battery-electric model provides 480 kW of power and is scheduled to be launched on the European market in the fourth quarter of 2023.
On the other hand, the Heavy Duty FCEV impressively extends its range up to 800 kilometers with a 400 kW electric axle drive. The model is set to be delivered in select European countries, including France, Switzerland, and Germany, by the end of the year. The refueling process for the FCEV variant takes around 20 minutes, offering convenience for businesses seeking hydrogen-based solutions.
It is worth noting that the underlying technology for these cutting-edge electric trucks originated from Nikola Motors. Back in 2019, Iveco and its parent company, CNH Industrial, jointly invested US$250 million in Nikola Motors to facilitate the introduction of electric trucks to the European market. In this collaboration, Iveco was responsible for supplying the chassis. However, in May 2023, Nikola decided to exit the European market, leading to Iveco taking full control of the joint venture, which was rebranded as EVCO, signifying “Electric Vehicles COmpany.” The name change reflects the company’s renewed focus on electric mobility.
Both the Heavy Duty BEV and FCEV are being manufactured at the Ulm plant and will be available through Iveco’s distribution network, which comprises 254 dealers across Europe. Iveco’s emphasis on sustainable solutions and its strong presence in the market position it as a significant player in shaping the future of eco-friendly commercial transportation. As the European launch in the fourth quarter of 2023 approaches, customers across the region eagerly await the introduction of these innovative electric trucks, representing a step forward in eco-conscious heavy-duty trucking.
