BMW Motorrad is making further strides in the electric vehicle market with the introduction of the all-new CE 02. Positioned as an affordable electric bike, the CE 02 is described as a unique offering that falls outside the traditional categories of e-scooters and e-motorcycles.
Drawing inspiration from its predecessor, the CE 04, the CE 02 was initially showcased as a concept two years ago. The production model stays true to its minimalist design ethos, featuring a tubular steel frame, a die-cast aluminum swingarm, and 14-inch wheels. LED lighting units and a flat, two-person seat with a height of just 29.5 inches (749 mm) contribute to its sleek aesthetics.
The bike predominantly embraces a black color scheme with granite grey accents. However, for those seeking a bolder look, the optional Highline Package introduces gold forks, a tri-color seat, and wheel decals.
Following the minimalist approach, the cockpit of the CE 02 houses a 3.5-inch display that provides essential information such as speed and battery charge status. Notably, the bike is equipped with a USB-C charging port and Keyless Ride technology for added convenience.
The Highline Package enhances the CE 02 with heated grips and a smartphone cradle, which integrates with a dedicated app to transform smartphones into a secondary vehicle display.
Powering the CE 02 are two removable 1.96 kWh lithium-ion battery packs. These batteries drive an electric motor capable of producing 15 hp (11 kW / 15 PS) and 41 lb-ft (55 Nm) of torque. With this setup, the 291 lbs (132 kg) CE 02 can accelerate from 0-30 mph (0-48 km/h) in an impressive three seconds, reaching a top speed of 59 mph (95 km/h). Importantly, the bike boasts a range exceeding 56 miles (90 km) according to the World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC).
While the European variant shares many similarities, BMW has confirmed the availability of a low output version in the region. This variant generates 5 hp (4 kW / 5 PS) and reaches a top speed of 28 mph (45 km/h). Although not particularly fast, this model complies with the requirements of the AM driving license class, allowing riders as young as 15 years old, with a car license, to operate it in countries like Germany.
The CE 02 comes with two external chargers tailored for household outlets, offering capacities of 0.9 kW or 1.5 kW. The former can charge the bike from 20% to 80% in approximately 170 minutes, while a full 0-100% charge requires around 330 minutes.
Opting for the Highline Package provides customers with the faster charger, reducing the 20-80% charging time to 140 minutes. Furthermore, this package enables a 0-100% charge in 290 minutes, which is 40 minutes faster compared to the standard charger.
In the United States, the BMW CE 02 carries a starting price of $7,599, excluding the $595 destination charge. Additionally, a range of accessories will be available, including an anti-theft alarm and various side cases, catering to the needs of riders seeking customization options.
