Plug Power, a leading provider of hydrogen fuel cell solutions, is expanding its GenKey solution to enable small warehouses to switch to hydrogen-powered forklifts. The company is offering a modular H2 storage solution that is designed to be installed easily and quickly on the warehouse’s property, providing a more affordable and sustainable source of fuel to meet their business goals.
The decision to expand its product line comes after Plug Power realized that the switch to hydrogen-powered forklifts had not been financially feasible for fleets of 40 to 100 vehicles, even with the supply of green hydrogen. The company aims to address this issue with its expanded GenKey offering, providing customers with fewer than 100 forklifts the option to transition to fuel cells.

“With Plug’s expanded GenKey offering, customers with fewer than 100 forklifts at a warehouse facility will now have the option to transition to fuel cells, and a much more affordable, reliable and sustainable source of fuel to meet their business goals,” says Jose Luis Crespo, general manager of fuel cell applications and global accounts.
According to Plug Power, more than a quarter of all forklifts sold in the US are powered by hydrogen, as fuel cells offer significant cost savings compared to batteries. “Customers can save upwards of $260,000 and as high as $1 million per year when compared to batteries,” the company writes in its press release.
Plug Power’s GenKey product line includes fuel cells for use in forklifts, among other applications, and the company has recently achieved another milestone with an aircraft taking off on its first test flight using Plug Power technology.
Orders for the GenKey product line are now being accepted, with units scheduled for delivery in the US by the end of the year. The product series is also expected to be available in the European market soon.

Plug Power’s expansion of its GenKey solution will enable small warehouses to adopt hydrogen-powered forklifts, providing a more affordable, reliable, and sustainable source of fuel. As the company continues to innovate and expand its product line, it is likely to play a significant role in driving the adoption of fuel cell technology across various industries.
