Tesla rolls out Steam game support for the new Model S and X vehicles

In February, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said they were working on bringing Steam to their vehicles.

Today, Tesla officially rolled out the Steam integration for the latest Model S and Model X as part of the Holiday Update.

The video shared by the Twitter account @Tesla shows the infotainment system on Tesla cars running Steam Beta and even graphics-demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077.

Steam is a video game platform from Valve that provides thousands of titles including AAA games such as God of War, Far Cry 6, Battlefield.

Not all Tesla cars can play Steam games. Steam is only available exclusively on the Tesla Model S and Model X.

Even then, only the Model S and Model X, which were produced in 2022 and above. The Tesla Model S and Model X also have screens in the second row, so these two models are indeed the right ones to integrate with Steam.

When the company first announced its intention to embrace Steam, they made it clear that front and second row passengers could have fun.

Of course when the car is completely stopped and still. Even though there’s no keyboard and mouse inside the Tesla, the only way to play games from Steam is with a compatible controller.

Steam and Tesla have support for many Bluetooth enabled controllers, including PlayStation and Xbox.

In the shared video, there is also DualSense from PS5 which is used to play Cyberpunk 2077.

The infotainment system in the Tesla Model S and Model X uses an AMD RDNA 2 GPU. The GPU is the technology behind the PlayStation 5 and AMD Ryzen chips.

Over the past few years, Tesla has actually been building up its in-vehicle gaming library. Tesla added several game titles including PUBG Mobile, Cuphead, and Fallout Shelter.

However, by bringing Steam on board, Tesla is adding more than just a game or two to the roster. Tesla in its announcement indicated that the integration with Steam will bring thousands of games to the cars.

Tesla previously ran into trouble with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for allowing people to play games even while driving.

So most likely the user will not be able to play Steam games while the car is in motion. In addition to Steam integration, Tesla’s holiday update also gives owners access to Apple Music for the in-car infotainment system.
