While most manufacturers have announced their electrification targets, several mobility companies are doing the same.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi wants drivers to use EVs. Companies in the process of moving towards electrification by setting a deadline of 2030 will not use vehicles with internal combustion engines.
Speaking to CBS News, Khosrowshahi said he is aiming to become all-electric by the end of the decade in the US, Canada and Europe.
This weekend, Uber is expanding the option of using electric vehicles for their rides. Known as Uber’s Comfort Electric option, the program will be available in 25 different cities and states in North America.
With only 25,000 electric vehicles on the platform out of an estimated total of one million vehicles, Uber has a lot to do to reach their electrification target.
Khosrowshahi said his company will double the number of EVs by 2023, allocating $800 million to help offset the high initial purchase costs of vehicles with internal combustion engines.
Uber is also incentivizing it by paying EV drivers an extra dollar for every ride they take, as well as discounting charging fees.
Uber is also working with Hertz to allow drivers to rent Teslas, either on a weekly or monthly basis.
At $344 per week from Hertz, renting a Tesla Model 3 isn’t cheap, but the rental price includes insurance, basic maintenance, and unlimited mileage.
