In the automotive world, the conversion from conventional engine cars to electric cars is not something new. But a unique step taken by General Motors or GM. In the midst of the increasing trend of electric cars, this automotive brand from the United States provides an interesting program for those of you who are interested in electric cars but have a limited budget.
GM provides a program where old GM cars that still use conventional engines can be transformed into electric cars at a relatively attractive price.
As quoted from the Detroit Free Press, GM itself calls this program the Electric Conncet and Cruise eCrate Package. In this GM program, GM mentions that the conversion of old cars that still use conventional engines to EVs takes the Creat Engine concept or conversion of old 78 engines with the latest generation V8 that has been done before.
Scott Bell as VP of Chevrolet said that various brands under the auspices of GM now have conversion programs into electric cars. “This time the Crate Engine program will adopt the previous crate engine. And later for this program, we already have a special team that previously served on the previous Crate Engine in a newer and more sophisticated way,” said Bell.
Actually, GM has wanted to launch a conversion program from conventional cars to EV cars since 2021. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this program has been temporarily suspended. Until now, GM does not know when this conversion program will be implemented.
What GM has done with the conversion program from conventional cars to electric cars is not the first time this has happened. Because previously, a fellow manufacturer from the United States, Ford has also issued a more or less similar name to the Eluminator. From this program, Ford claims success because many conventional cars are converted into electric cars.
For the engine conversion program carried out by GM, they have prepared various aspects. For example, such as assembly facilities, dealers, after markets, as well as training and equipment that will later be useful for maintaining the convertible car.
