Earlier this month, BMW started production of the i7 at the Dingolfing plant, Germany. i7 electric sedan shares production line with 7 Series with internal combustion engine
The factory in Southern Bavaria is one of more than 30 BMW production sites worldwide, and is the largest in Europe.
In preparing the Dingolfing plant to produce the new 7 Series and i7, BMW invested more than 300 million euros.
After providing the first samples as demo vehicles to dealers, BMW will begin shipping customer cars in the fall of this year.
The BMW i7 xDrive60 uses an all-wheel drive variant, with two BMW eDrive electric motors and a lithium-ion battery with a power of 101.7 kWh.
The electric motor at the front is said to be capable of producing up to 190 kW or 258 hp, while the other electric motor at the rear can provide up to 230 kW or 313 hp.
With the combination of the two electric motors, this sedan is capable of delivering a total power of up to 400 kW or the equivalent of 544 hp, with a maximum torque of 745 Nm.
BMW also claims that its large lithium-ion battery is capable of carrying the BMW i7 up to a distance of 590 km to 625 km, according to Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedures (WLTP) standards.
For charging the battery, this i7 has fast charging technology with a maximum power of 195 kW. Dimensionally, this i7 xDrive60 has a posture (pxWxH): 5,390 x 1,950 x 1,544 mm, and a wheelbase of 3,215 mm.
“Our new BMW 7 Series is the first luxury sedan in the world to offer customers a choice between three types of drive. Whether fully electric, combustion-powered or, soon, plug-in hybrid, we have the flexible production structures and outstanding integration skills we need to manufacture such a diverse range of drives efficiently,” Milan Nedeljkovic, BMW AG Board member for production, comments .
BMW says it has assembled the i7 electric drive components internally at Dingolfing.
Components such as the battery and the integrated electric drive system are all manufactured at BMW’s Competence Center for e-Drive Production, near the Dingolfing plant.
The Competence Center for e-Drive Production facility can produce components for more than 500,000 electric cars per year.
