Chinese automaker Geely is seeking to produce more electric vehicles by building a second battery factory. Geely built its second power plant in Guling district, China, with a production capacity of 12 gigawatt hours (GWh).
The plant will add to existing production from its first plant, which is located in Ganzhou city, Jiangxi province.
It is estimated that construction of the new project will take 24 months, with plans to start trial production by the end of 2023.
The new facility will have a final capacity of up to 30 GWh and will be used for research, as well as battery development and for the production of battery cells, modules and packages, according to the Paultan report.
The new factory is being built in collaboration with Ganzhou-based EV battery maker Farasis Energy, one of the top 10 battery manufacturers in China.
Geely’s Fuling 12 GWh plant is the second strategic partnership between the two companies, the first with the Ganzhou plant.
The two parties first decided to work together in December 2020 and an agreement was signed to develop battery production that would eventually reach the expected capacity of 120 GWh, although it has not been disclosed when this capacity will be achieved.
The total investment in the Ganzhou project started in May last year by technology group Geely is said to be around 30 billion yuan, of which 8.5 billion yuan will be used to make the facility reach an annual capacity of 12 GWh in the first phase.
