BETA Technologies has received a Special Airworthiness Certificate from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) allowing its ALIA A250 electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft to conduct market survey flights. According to the company, the authorization is the first of its kind granted to an electric VTOL aircraft.
Issued under Part 21 of FAA regulations, the certificate allows BETA to conduct specified flights with operators and other industry stakeholders so they can evaluate the aircraft’s capabilities and potential applications. The authorization also permits operations across a broader geographic area, subject to applicable FAA limitations.
First Flight Under Market Survey Authorization
BETA conducted the A250’s first flight under the new authorization on October 20, 2026. The aircraft took off vertically from Plattsburgh International Airport in New York, transitioned to wing-borne flight and landed vertically at Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport in Vermont.
The flight covered 34 nautical miles in 20 minutes, according to BETA.
The company plans to use market survey flights to demonstrate the aircraft to prospective operators and gather operational experience as it continues development towards full type certification and commercial operations.
Aircraft Specifications and Potential Applications
The all-electric A250 is designed to operate from locations with or without runway access. It shares core systems with BETA’s ALIA conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) aircraft, including propulsion systems, flight control computers, batteries and charging equipment.
BETA says the shared architecture allows technical development, manufacturing investment and operational experience from one platform to inform the other.
The A250 features dual pilot controls and is designed to carry up to five passengers or more than 1,200 pounds of cargo. The company identifies cargo and logistics, medical transportation, defense and passenger transport as potential applications.
BETA also cites operating cost, reliability, range and payload as design considerations. The announcement does not provide detailed performance figures or independent comparisons for these claims.
Company and Government Comments
BETA founder and chief executive officer Kyle Clark said the authorization would allow operators to evaluate the aircraft and assess its suitability for their operations.
“This authorization brings vertical flight closer to the people and places that will put it to work, building on BETA’s track record of industry firsts. We completed the first crewed electric VTOL transition flight in 2024, we were first to receive market survey authorization for our conventional takeoff and landing aircraft (CTOL), and now we’re first with our VTOL,” said Clark.
He added:
“Operators can now experience the VTOL firsthand and begin planning how it fits into their businesses, from connecting communities to moving people and goods at a lower cost. This is an important step toward commercial adoption, and we’re grateful to the FAA for developing the regulatory framework that makes these operations possible.”
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the agency would continue working with aircraft developers on integrating new technologies into the national airspace.
“The FAA is committed to working with American innovators to safely integrate these new aircraft into our national airspace, while maintaining the rigorous safety standards that have made the United States a global leader in aviation.”
US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy also commented on the authorization, saying:
“The FAA’s special airworthiness certification of BETA’s A250 aircraft is another critical step towards enabling the future of flight in America.”
Duffy also acknowledged the FAA safety team’s work and referred to broader efforts to introduce new aircraft and modernise the US air traffic control system.
Full Type Certification Remains Ahead
The Special Airworthiness Certificate applies to specified market survey activities and does not constitute full type certification or unrestricted commercial operating approval.
BETA plans to continue flight operations and engage with potential operators while progressing towards certification. The market survey programme is intended to give stakeholders opportunities to assess the A250 and consider possible uses in passenger transport, logistics, medical services and defense.
The timing of full certification and commercial deployment was not specified in the announcement.
