Hanoi has partnered with LG Energy Solution and Honda to develop a large-scale battery-swapping network for electric motorcycles in the Vietnamese capital.
The project is scheduled to begin with a pilot phase in the third quarter of 2026, involving around 50 battery-swapping stations and approximately 500 electric motorcycles in central Hanoi.
The initial deployment will focus on areas around Hoan Kiem ward, where Hanoi authorities plan to introduce low-emission regulations as part of broader urban emissions reduction efforts.
Following an evaluation period, the partners plan to expand the network beginning in the third quarter of 2027, targeting approximately 1,000 battery-swapping stations across the city.
The parties said they will jointly develop swapping infrastructure, standardized battery systems, safety management systems and a business platform for electric motorcycles.
Under the agreement, LG Energy Solution will supply 2170 cylindrical battery cells and oversee battery safety management, battery lifecycle systems and station operations.
Honda will provide electric motorcycles, battery packs and battery-swapping equipment, while Hanoi authorities will support licensing, local coordination and policy implementation.
Vietnam remains one of the world’s largest motorcycle markets, with around 80 million motorcycles in operation nationwide in 2025, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.
The committee said approximately 3.2 million of those vehicles are electric motorcycles.
Hanoi currently has around eight million vehicles on its roads and plans to introduce a pilot low-emission zone within Ring Road 1 beginning July 1 as part of efforts to reduce urban pollution.
The battery-swapping initiative forms part of broader efforts across Asia to accelerate electric two-wheeler adoption while addressing charging convenience and urban mobility challenges.
